Planted with Light shoot by Kate Robinson

I was thrilled to be a part of the Planted with Light workshop that the very lovely Kate Robinson held recently. I gave a brief chat about blogging (something I was VERY nervous about doing!!), and then styled a shoot for the participants to learn how Kate goes about shooting. It was such a fun day, both for the girls who attended... and learnt so much from Kate, and for us vendors who helped out. Kate's family were incredibly accommodating having us all out to their lovely place in the country and then supplying us with delicious food all day!! We had the gorgeous Claire Mossong and her hubby Alex model for us for the day (a side career to photography beckoning perhaps?) and Steph from Bubblerock was there to capture the day... be sure to check out this film before you scroll down.

West Coast Beach wedding by Kate Robinson

This week seems to unintentionally have turned into beach wedding inspiration week! Three stunning beach weddings in one week... what a treat! And another gorgeous Bali one coming up tomorrow. This Karekare wedding highlights the west coast beaches of Auckland so beautifully... it's quintessential New Zealand scenery. Kate Robinson captured this lovely heartfelt wedding that seemed a celebration of family and community as much as it did the gorgeous couple. I'll hand you over to the capable hands of the beautiful bride Charlotte to tell you a bit more about their day.

Our wedding was held at Karekare beach on the west coast of Auckland where I grew up and where my immediate and much of my extended family still live. What made our wedding day so special was the amount of help and love that our families, friends and the community gave us in planning the day and with the day itself. In the days leading up to the wedding much of the extended family and many friends could be seen at my parents house scrubbing windows, dropping things off and getting things ready. On the day of the wedding itself, I left the reception venue in the morning to get ready in my Granny's library and the Aunts and neighbours swept in to take charge of finishing off setting the tables and so on. Many of the Karekare locals also contributed towards making the wedding what it was. My grandmothers gardener Carlene collected buckets and buckets of foliage to decorate the reception tent with.

The inspiration for the day came from Karekare beach. It is a stunning west coast beach with black sand and ever changing surf conditions and is in a league of it's own of all the west coast beaches given the huge expanse of sand dunes that separates the sea from the road and civilization. Everything was kept very simple for the ceremony on the beach, my Dad made the signing table out of a flat piece of driftwood attached to a thick branch and dug into the dunes to stand up right and the overall colours were quite neutral, beige's and greens to complement the beautiful scenery.

The vast majority of the wedding was DIY. My Aunt and Uncle spear-headed the catering with help from the rest of the family. With a family catered wedding out of a domestic kitchen which was smack bang in the middle of the reception venue, it was crucial that there was someone in charge so that both sets of parents could relax and enjoy the day. We both really wanted to have a sit down dinner and managed to fit 100 people into a 10 x 4 meter tent (it is possible!). My sisters decorated the tent with foliage and tumble weeds (they are much more beautiful than their name would suggest). We made lanterns with twine covered in glue and glitter wrapped around a balloon (which you pop once the glue is dried) and also bought plain white lanterns which my sister painted designs on. We bought a big supply of glow sticks from Trade Me to hang inside the lanterns and also had fairy lights strung around the tent. It was definitely cosy in the tent but it meant people really got to know each other!

Romantic whimsical wedding by Kate Robinson

Hello there friends! Did you all have a lovely weekend? We had a {MAG}rouge shoot on Saturday and despite the impending forecast and the rain that threatened throughout the day we managed to get everything wrapped up before it became a deluge on the drive home! Phew!So over this rain we've had for the past month, but I was excited to notice teeny tiny buds on the trees today, in fact our willows are quite green, and daisies springing up on the lawn too. It seems a month earlier than last year so I'm taking that as a good sign!! Yay... spring!!! We're starting off the week with this gorgeous wedding from Kate Robinson Photography. Love the vintage food tins used on the tables... and how cute are the little ones in their lilac dresses and hair crowns. The happy couple share some information about their day.

We wanted a very pretty soft and whimsical look for our wedding. Our theme colour was purple, which was the colour of the bridesmaid dresses and bridal bouquet, but these were set against a backdrop which was bursting with a striking palette of lilacs, pinks, blues, greens and coral.

While we wanted a romantic setting, we wanted to ensure it was also fun and quirky, showing our personalities. The venue had a sprinkling of individual touches such as a Photobooth prop basket full of Lenny’s collection of hats from all around the globe which was a big hit with our guests. We live in the UK and collect vintage reading material. We had a collection of vintage newspapers, menu cards and magazines dotted around the venue, together with short hand written descriptions of each item. Esther loves ribbons and Naomi, our fabulous florist did a brilliant job of creating a ribbon garland which was used to decorate the altar. It was a mixture of pastel colours, with purple accents, and each ribbon had a different texture and design. It looked beautiful swaying gently in the breeze, against the luscious green foliage of the venue, and the striking white pergola.

The bridesmaids each wore a different vintage style hair clip while Esther chose to keep her jewellery to a minimum. For some sparkle, she carried a gold knuckle duster clutch, and wore delicate gold wedge heels shoes. Esther’s gown was simple but it was complimented by a floor length veil with lace detail. The groomsmen and Lenny each wore different floral ties, of pink, purple and grey shades.

The chairs along the aisles were decorated with beautiful blooms in jars. The guest tables were decorated with tea cups, old fashioned jars and vintage tins of different styles and sizes all filled with beautiful flowers and candles. Each guest table had a different patterned place card from the very gorgeous collection at Carrot & Stick Press, and each guest’s name had been beautifully hand-written in by one of our bridesmaids.

On the bridal table, we had an eclectic collection of pretty floral teacups, old fashioned jars with flowers and pretty antique jugs filled with flowers. We draped a rustic ‘Eat, drink and be married’ banner along the length of the bridal table which was specially handmade by the lovely Colleen at Purple Peony Couture.

We added DIY touches with personalised drink flags and handwritten notes to accompany our yummy lolly station where we had Asian lollies (from where we were born), Scottish shortbread and fudge (from where we now live) and some good old Kiwi favourites. We provided pink stripped candy bags and purple polka dotted lolly cups for guests to use. The venue had provided us with a romantic birdcage for envelope gifts which we decorated with flowers, and framed photos of our parents’ weddings were displayed next to the birdcage. We placed a program on each guest table which consisted of the menu, photos and names of our gorgeous wedding party and a thank you note. These were part of the same stationery suite as our wedding invitation and thank you cards.

To keep our guests entertained, we played a trivia card game throughout the evening meal where guests had to guess what we’d already done from a deck of cards listing absolutely crazy things one must do in a person’s lifetime. Little Black Photobooth provided a photobooth which was supplemented by Lenny’s collection of quirky hats which guests used as dress up props. It was such a hit that there was quite a queue of guests taking turns to use it! Each guest could take home their ‘mug shots’, and put a 2nd copy in our guest book together with a special message to us. As the night wore on and the alcohol flowed, the photos got funnier and funnier, and at one point, there were 8 of us in the photobooth! It was a very fun evening, which was nicely concluded with the wedding party dancing (and some headbanging!) to Prodigy’s ‘Firestarter’ to close the evening.

Chic beach wedding by Kate Robinson

This gorgeous wedding by Kate Robinson just screams New Zealand summer in the best possible way. The little 'bunny tails' in the vases remind me so much of my childhood! I am going to hand you straight over to the lovely bride Lisa who shares all the details with us...

Mahia was an obvious choice for our big day; we spent our very first summer holiday there together in 2008 and have returned every year since. When friends of ours offered us there stunning Te Mahia cliff top home, we knew we had found the venue of our dreams and fortunately the friendly Mahia locals were right when they said November was the most settled month for the sleepy little East Coast town.

With a 20-month long engagement we had plenty of time to nail down exactly how we wanted our big day to look. It’s no secret to those close to me that I am a huge op-shop fan and so the wedding very quickly took on a homemade/vintage theme of its own.

My husband manages the family scaffold business and so we wanted to add a touch of his work to the day. He erected an amazing old, rusty scaffold arch, which we then decorated with white bunting flags made from old sheets picked up at the Red Cross, which was the focal point of the ceremony. An old school desk and vintage wooden chair to sign the register on really topped off the pre-loved theme.

I really wanted to mark out the aisle in a way that was different. I found a how-to-guide for making carnival pinwheels and with bamboo sticks, white ribbon and matte card I made 20 wheels which lined the aisle, the ribbon blowing in the wind made a brilliant statement.

For the centerpieces I collected old jars for vases and we used foreign words (from countries we had been) for love as table names. I spent 7 months collecting wine glasses from op-shops so that each guest (all 114 of them) had a glass uniquely theirs; they were also invited to take their glass home with them as a keepsake.

My wonderful granddad that is known for his beautiful handwriting, took up the challenge, writing all the place card settings. Once he had finished we took to writing personal messages to each guest on the back and then tying them to each wine glass.

In an amazing picnic hamper, also picked up from an op-shop, I had little bags of my homemade cookies for guests to take home. I’ve always loved the personal touches at weddings, and wanted our guests to have plenty of little treasures to take home and enjoy.

Our vows were a mix of tradition and words we had written ourselves. There were certainly a few tears from bride and groom and guests alike. It was a very special time and I’m thankful we had someone there to record it all for us.

Having all four sets of grandparents there in the front row watching us was wonderful and we felt so lucky that they were able to celebrate the day with us.

The weekend was such as amazing coming together of family and friends. Jono and I felt so blessed to be surrounded by our nearest and dearest as we took our first few steps as husband and wife, almost two months later we are still riding the high. We had, without question, the best day of our lives.

Beautiful apple orchard shoot from Kate Robinson Photography

Get ready to have your socks knocked off with this gorgeous shoot from Kate Robinson. Sunflare... check, apple orchard... check, stunning flowers... check, gorgeous people... check.  What more do you need? It's got it all!! Sadly we're loosing Kate to Australia soon however she's still going to be popping back to shoot weddings throughout the year. Here's what Kate had to say...

Kerry & Aaron have to be my most photographed couple! To date, I have photographed them 5 times on separate occasions; their Engagement, Wedding, both of their immediate families and this Encore shoot. I think the word 'Encore' is perfect for this type of shoot. The origin of the word came from: "Whenever any Gentlemen are particularly pleased with a Song, at their crying out Encore ... the Performer is so obliging as to sing it over again." With an Encore session, it's a chance for you to get in your wedding dress again and have photos somewhere you wouldn't have been able to for your wedding.

It actually rained A LOT on Kerry & Aaron's wedding day so they didn't get many photos outside. Kerry had always dreamed of having photos in long grass with lots of sun flare, so the Encore shoot was a perfect solution. This shoot was also for a promo video Jared Brandon - shot for me which is under production right now.

Oh and happy birthday to my lovely husband! I think we need an encore session honey? xo
