Vintage Bridal Shoot by Josie Richardson

I have a shoot with a little bit of a difference for you today. Josie Richardson sent over this amazing inspiration shoot which was centered around an historical exploration of bridal wear over the last century. All with a vintage feel to it. It started originally when Josie found a 1950’s dress in a second hand store in Brisbane and fell in love with it. It had been handmade and although the fabric was of a synthetic nylon style material, it spoke volumes about the era from which it came. Fashioned after Grace Kelly’s wedding dress and made at a time, after WWII, where fabric was so scarce wedding dresses were often borrowed. Josie tells us more about the shoot and the stories behind the dresses.

What had originally started off as a ‘one dress, one model’ shoot grew to encompass styles from nearly every era as far back as the 1920s as more and more dresses found their way to me. A 1960s dress was given to Glenys at ‘Preloved Bridal’, by the husband of it's original owner after she’d passed away. It had been made by a local woman who had individually stitched the pin tucked details around the bodice and sleeves by hand. Ultimately I ended up with 12 wedding dresses, many with their own unique story. Included was a new Karen Willis Holmes design, the ‘Millie’, to cover the modern bride though still with a distinctively vintage look to it. I resourced hats, gloves, flowers and other accessories from a range of suppliers, all wiling to be a part of the project.

The photos were taken over two days including a number of outdoor locations around Brisbane and the indoor photos were taken at the Treasury Hotel in Brisbane, a building completed late in the 19th century. In order to remain true to the historical theme of the shoot I photographed the bulk of it in film. I’ve found the look and colour of film to surpass that of very good digital cameras but mostly the grain in the Black and White images gives them a vintage feel that matches the eras of the dresses.

Vintage Tea Party by Kate Grewal

Well hello there lovely readers!! How was your weekend? We had the loudest thunderstorm I've ever heard in my life on Friday night... it honestly sounded like someone had launched a rocket at the house! Thankfully it didn't seem to overly bother puppy Charlie, she didn't make a sound... although that didn't stop my hubs getting up at 1am to give her a cuddle and make sure she was ok!! We managed to catch up with some family, enjoyed a lovely evening with friends and had some chill time at home! Perfect!!

How gorgeous is this tea party shoot from Kate Grewal? I'm loving the sweet pale yellow dress, and oh that cake looks so good it's leaping out of the page begging me to taste it!

Pretty garden wedding from Vela Images

This delightful wedding from my lovely friend Greta from Vela Images has the most deliciously pretty details, I hardly know where to begin!! From the beautiful crockery and lace on the tables, to the stunning array of pastel shades in the bridesmaids dresses, to the brides utterly stunning dress, there is something for everyone. Greta is such a master at documenting gorgeous details like this.

Francesca and Dan (well, Francesca in particular) became obsessed with the 1920s and 30s just before they got engaged, so when it came time to plan and style their wedding they knew they wanted to infuse it with their newfound passion! With that in mind, they chose a waterlily garden as the venue. The waterlilies reminded Francesca of old paintings and cake tins and was an ideal place to celebrate their romantic and relaxed day in true vintage style.

In keeping with the 20s theme, Francesca commissioned her gorgeous drop waist dress from Corina Snow. She'd fallen in love with the fashion of the era and was looking for something classic and elegant in lace. While browsing through a wedding magazine she saw a picture of the back of a similar dress that Corina had designed and excitedly made an appointment to meet with her.

“My advice to other couples? Have fun with it!! Try to include details about your personalities and style as a couple – the more you put in the more the day will feel unique and yours!”

Family and friends helped with the planning and sourcing of items, including the beautiful vintage car that took Francesca to the ceremony. The owner, Roger, had in fact sold the car a few weeks before, but only on the condition that he could still use it to drive Francesca to her wedding!
Francesca and Dan felt that their wedding was really ‘them’. The many hours spent planning and designing were all worth it to them as it was like no other wedding they had been to. Sharing the beautiful day with their parents, families and close friends made it perfect!

Dessert for two... a sweet engagement shoot by Laura Murray

Happy Friday everyone! I have the sweetest engagement shoot for you today from the very talented Laura Murray. Jessica - the owns Vintage Affair Rentals in Colorado and styled this super cute 'dessert for two' themed shoot for her and her fiance Greg. Jessica's Mum made the quilt and bunting for her and I would say by the looks of this there will be a lot of goodness in her wedding to come! Doesn't this look like the most romantic spot to partake in dessert for two? It certainly has me hankering after a sunny day in a field - wishful thinking around here right now... yesterday absolutely poured with rain ALL day long and today is forecast for more of the same :-(

Queen of the Road shoot by Simply Bloom

If you missed the launch of the inaugural issue of {MAG}rouge last week you may not have had the chance to lay your eyes on this beautiful and ethereal shoot from our friends over at Simply Bloom. When we first mooted the idea of an online magazine between us, we didn't really think too much about the cover shoot, and when whilst emailing Simply Bloom about another project I had worked on  with them (these cute little invites I did for Christine's baby shower earlier in the year), they mentioned a cover shoot, we were naturally over the moon! And once the {MAG}rouge team came up with the road trip theme, and the girls found that incredible gold car, the shoot started to take shape. So we want to send a huge thank you to both Vania and Christine who we adore, and who are just so insanely talented, and also to the lovely models who jumped at the chance of doing this shoot with them.
These are a few extra shots that didn't feature in the magazine. To see the remainder of the shoot click here. And to see more of my stationery click here.
