Sweet old fashioned romance by Sutherland Kovach...

It was the stunning bride that first caught my attention with this wedding, and then once I read her encounter of the day I was hooked. It's such a sweet old fashioned romance kinda story... the one you can't help but fall in love with. And with so much sentiment behind some of the personal touches at their wedding. I love featuring the work of Hannah & Jasmine from Sutherland Kovach, I'm sure each wedding carries me away more and more. And combined with the amazing talents of florist Annie Oxborough from Me, Myself and I, well they're a team to be reckoned with! Jessie puts it all so beautifully into words so I'll let her tell you their sweet story...

My husband Paul and I were married on January 29th of this year in the small farming town of Warkworth, North of Auckland City. Paul and I had lived on his father’s chestnut orchard in Warkworth for the year prior to our engagement. We fell in love with the property whilst falling even more in love with each other… and Paul proposed to me atop a hill looking out over the orchard in May 2010. We were married at the local church down the road several months later. Our photos were on the farm and our reception was held in the Matakana Town Hall, which has a very romantic country fete feel about it. I could envisage our wedding as soon as I laid eyes on the hall: long conversational tables draped in heavy fabrics with endless flowers in dusky hues of pinks, peaches and buttercup yellows… lace and silverware…white festoon lights, a grand chandelier and a 50s inspired black and white ballroom floor. The piano... a string quartet... gosh even the old wooden chairs were magnificent. I collected cut crystal vases, antique candle stick holders and intricate doilies throughout our engagement and sourced eclectic china plates and vintage napkins from Maureen at The China Cabinet

Paul and I met at school when I was only 15 years old. We decided to get married young (why wait?) - and we wanted our wedding to reflect this so that our friends felt comfortable sharing in a youthful celebration with us. The hall gave us this youthful charm - and the old world banquet style décor and antique chandelier gave us the elegance we needed to formalise the occasion.

Paul’s Grandmother made 155 jars of grapefruit marmalade and my Mother’s cousin cross-stitched monograms to go atop each and every jar! Upon arriving at the hall each guest could find their named jar with their table number on the back to guide them to their seat. The marmalade was a sweet reminder of the day at breakfast the following morning. Guests were served muddled cocktails in Agee jars and stamped a thumbprint tree whilst awaiting the bridal party. The tree is now framed on our lounge wall.

We drank exquisite French champagne from French champagne saucers and spoiled our guests for choice with 12 intricate cakes at an old fashioned cake stand for dessert… Apricot and Sour Cream Cake with Cinnamon Syrup was the favourite! The entrée and main were served via an alternate plate drop to get conversation flowing. The plates are laid out in a unanimous and very dramatic fashion and guests can decide if they would like to switch with their neighbour or hold onto what they are served.

Many of the elders in my family couldn’t be at our wedding as they are no longer with us. I was desperate to still have their presence in the hall so my Mother crafted old family wedding portraits onto calico drapes that hung on the walls. She framed wedding certificates from as far back as 1892 to sit at the tables. Their legacy didn’t go unnoticed. Paul’s Mother made our wedding cake that was topped with a vintage bride and groom from Flotsam and Jetsam.

I have to laugh at Lena's "holy heaven"! Kate this wedding is absolutely gorgeous with a capital "G"! I love that dress on her, it suits her to a "T" and her hair is perfect with the flowers perfectly placed. I would have loved to have a little bit of the apricot and sour cream cake with cinnamon syrup. Sounds heavenly and I am not an apricot fan. The photography is amazing as is this entire wedding. I love everything about it and thanks for sharing :-)
