Fineline Photography

I have the loveliest Coromandel beach side wedding for you today from Fineline Photography, they've done a beautiful job of capturing it. I love how they've transformed the marquee with DIY chandeliers and strips of fabric... it looks amazing! The incredibly gorgeous bride Jessica shares their story with us...

Ben and I technically met through the gym, but it was the audacity of a friend that properly introduced us following many months of awkward glances during workouts. At that point, I’d been living in New Zealand for just over a year and was deciding whether to return to the States or not. I easily chose to stay and somehow seven years have passed. We’ve managed to quite naturally mix our Kiwi and American heritages and enjoy our trans-Pacific holidays.

The family holiday house is in Matarangi, Coromandel and the reception was held next door under a large marquee overlooking the grassy reserve and ocean beyond. A cocktail lounge area was created just outside the marquee allowing space for guests to enjoy the summer weather and star gazing later in the night.

In consideration of our different backgrounds, the focus of the wedding was to create a relaxed environment which encouraged the mixing cultures. Narrow dining tables with a Mediterranean tapas menu were selected so guests were seated near one another and natural conversation would follow while sharing dishes.

Like most couples, we were working to a budget and choose the DIY path. Thankfully this is our normal inclination and we enjoy the process of creating something special from bits and bobs.

The theme if any, was ethereal shabby chic meets retro New Zealand beach side. We spent most weekends scavenging Salvation Army and the local tip shop for floral sheets, jam jars and old spirit bottles. It feels countless hours were dedicated to ripping sheets into small strips which were tied to fishing line and hung to create the floating canopy inside the marquee. Chandeliers were made in our tiny flat lounge during the winter – metal frames organised by a family member, faux crystal and pearl beads from the States and rags from local salvation army shops.

Flowers were inspired by the natural beauty of the Coromandel forest and were collected from the bush (and neighbours’ gardens) the day before. We came back covered in itchy bites with wide smiles and boot full of flora and fauna. Arrangements were then mixed with rosemary and lavender to fill the marquee with a calming herbal scent.

Etsy was great for the fun extras from handmade vintage clutches for the bridesmaids to custom cigar boxes for the groomsmen.

Blackbarn wedding by Fineline Photography

Isn't this black Vera Wang dress simply drop dead amazing!!! I absolutely love it and it looks just incredibly on the beautiful hills of the Hawkes Bay. Frances and Aaron got married at the Black Barn which is one of my favourite places down that way. Stunningly captured by Fineline Photography, the gorgeous bride Frances shares some details of their special day with us.

Aaron proposed in 2010 by setting up a beautiful picnic at my favourite spot, a stunning lake about an hours drive from our home. It was the perfect afternoon and the beginning to a busy year and a half of wedding planning! I had wanted to have my wedding at Black Barn for years, and it didn't take long to convince Aaron that it was the perfect place to marry. The inspiration behind our wedding was a whimsical garden feeling, from the lanterns, to the candles and flowers we wanted something very magical.

The cake really added to the whimsical feel, I wanted something unique and Aaron wanted something that tasted delicious! The cake Stacey created ticked both boxes, the gorgeous 3 tiered wedding cake with gardenias and shimmered lilac buttercream looked so wonderful in the vineyard setting!

I absolutely adore my wedding dress, after trying 40 or more wedding dresses on, I struggled to find something that I really loved. When I first went into Vera Wang I tried the dress on in white and thought it was beautiful, on my way out the door they showed me the same dress again but in black. Ten minutes after leaving I rang them back to make another appointment. I had to try the dress on, it was love! As I am known for wearing mostly pink clothing, falling in love with a black dress was a real surprise to everyone including me but I could not imagine myself in any other dress.

As I wear headpieces every day I knew I had to find the perfect headpiece. I couldn't wear a veil with my dress but I still wanted something dramatic. I spent eight months searching for it, finally finding it only 2 months before the wedding. With my dress I knew that my hair and make up had to be soft and romantic, and I was so happy with how it all came together.

I knew that my bridesmaids had to have the right dresses to balance mine. As soon as I saw a preview of their dresses I knew they were exactly what I was looking for. I counted down the days for them to be released so I could order them the moment they came into stores. I am so glad I did, all of the girls looked absolutely stunning. Of coarse Aaron looked wonderful as well!

My dream wedding at Black Barn was exactly the whimsical and wonderful day that I hoped it would be.
