Real Wedding: Emma + Alistair III

If this is the first you've seen of this lovely wedding by Michele Austen, make sure you check out the previous posts here and here. Emma has very sweetly given a lot of great advice for all you brides to be, so make sure you read her wise words!

Describe your wedding flowers:
My wedding flowers were white hydrangeas – as I love the textured, soft and full look of them – as well as white orchids. We chose orchids as my grandmother and late grandfather used to farm them in Fiji, so it was a flower that had a lot of meaning to my family.

Favourite detail of the day:
There were so many many details I loved, I put a lot of time into trying to create a day which represented the essence of Ali and I. For me it was so wonderful watching every element unfold around us to create a day that we will remember for the rest of our lives, and be a most special day to us. My favourite detail would have to be planning everything down to the littlest detail – allowing me to be calm and really enjoy each special moment that came about during the day. There was no stress it was just lovely.
What advise would you give out to someone planning their wedding?
- To pay everyone well in advance, then it is one less thing that you need to worry about on the day.
- Delegate
- Set everything up at the house that you are getting ready in – including nibbles and food that you don’t have to do a thing on the day. – Try and keep the whole day as stress free as possible – then the whole day will be a memory that you love and enjoy.
- Dance lessons are great! - even if you’d like to keep it simple, and have two left feet, it was a lovely experience to partake in as a couple – a really fun relationship builder learning something. Now we will always have a few moves we can dance.

Most memorable moment?
The moment the music started for me to walk in – at that moment it was like a wave of emotion and I thought I was about to cry! then my good friends boyfriend who was controlling the music made a small joke, I can’t even remember what it was, and with a wee giggle and a firm squeeze of my dad’s arm, it halted the tears long enough to get me to Ali.
What’s next for you as a couple?
Canada snowboarding honeymoon 2011! – we didn’t honeymoon straight after our wedding, as it would have been just too much to organise and we wanted to spend as much time as we could with the many family members that travelled to NZ to be with us. So we have planned our trip for the next snow season. Can’t wait!
Anything other details that help tell the story of your day?
Alistair and I found some beautiful pearl and silver antique brooches so I gave the bridal party and our mothers as a special gift. The morning of the wedding I gave them to them, with a heartfelt card thanking them all for their love and support - was a really special moment.
I also wrote Ali a letter telling him how much he meant to me as I wasn’t going to give a speech the wedding and I wanted to tell him how much I loved him. I snuck this in his shoe box so that he would find and read it while getting ready.
